Flowers Baking from Lynchburg, Virginia soon will be distributing for Nature’s Own and Wonder Bread at a center in Romney.

Les Shoemaker, executive director of the Hampshire County Development Authority, owner of Romney Business Park, said Flowers Baking Co. “signed the lease and will be operating out of Unit A in the park.”

The 2,500-square-foot building will house bread, delivery trucks and office space.

“We are starting with one independent distributor, Joshua Arnold, who lives in the area, and will add three to five distributors,” said Jackie Forrest, president of Flowers in Lynchburg.

Forrest said he has talked with more distributors, who will work out of the same distribution center in Romney in the near future.

Flowers’ distribution center also will handle Nature’s Own, Wonder Bread, Cobblestone bread and Blue Bird snack cakes. The company is headquartered in Thomasville, Georgia.

Forrest said the center will serve the Romney area.

“We have independent distributors instead of route sales people,” Forrest said. “Plans call for the number of routes to increase in the future.

“The routes will be owned and operated by independent distributors of Flowers.”

Flowers Baking Co. of Lynchburg produces and markets foods that are sold under the nature’s Own, Wonder, Sunbeam, Mary Jane and Tastykake brands.

The bakery serves central Virginia and a large portion of eastern West Virginia.

“As our sales grow here, we hope to add additional sales routes out of the Romney distribution center,” Forrest said.

Flowers Foods had sales of $3.75 billion in the baking industry in fiscal year 2013.

The company operates 47 bakeries that produce breads, buns, rolls, snack cakes and pastries.

“Flowers is a well-run company with an excellent product line, and we are thrilled to have them make a small start in what we hope will be a beneficial and long-term relationship with Hampshire County,” Shoemaker said.
