Steubenville Armed Robbery Suspect Allegedly Told Clerk "Don't Be a Hero, Baby"

A man who allegedly robbed a Hallmark store in Steubenville at knife-point reportedly told the clerk "don't be a hero, baby."

Jonathan Smith, 32, of Bergholz, was due in court on Tuesday morning after he allegedly robbed the Hallmark store at the Hollywood Plaza in Steubenville on Monday night.  According to police, Smith walked into the store, pulled out a knife and said "don't be a hero, baby," to the clerk.The clerk then opened the cash register and gave Smith the cash, who put it in his left front pocket, and walked out of the store.

The clerk told police she then watched Smith get into a silver Jeep and pull out of the plaza.  She was able to record the license plate.Steubenville Police officers responded to the scene and contacted Hancock County Dispatch, who gave them a number for the Jeep's owner, who said he had reported the Jeep stolen earlier from a local parking lot.  A few moments later, the Jeep was spotted on Sunset Boulevard and a pursuit was initiated, during which Smith stopped the vehicle and ran into a wooded area.

Smith was captured immediately and police said they found two knives in his left front pant pocket along with blue gloves. Officers also recovered the money in the woods where Smith was found hiding.

Smith appeared in court on Tuesday and had his bond set at $100,000.
