BridgeValley Community and Technical College, Thomas Memorial Hospital showcase WV health care career opportunities

Posted: Updated:

Through a partnership between BridgeValley Community and Technical College Nursing program and Thomas Memorial Hospital, participants at the annual Junior Nurse Academy at the college’s South Charleston campus received some hands-on experience.

Through a “Day in the Life of a Registered Nurse,” middle school students with aspirations of entering the nursing field had the opportunity to practice injections, perform assessments, intubate patients and perform laproscopic surgery in controlled high-fidelity environments. BridgeValley faculty also “instructed students on proper procedures utilizing the college’s advanced stimulation and skills laboratories," according to a news release.

In addition to performing hands-on tasks, the Junior Nurses also received uniforms and stethoscopes donated from a grant from The Foundation for Thomas Memorial and St. Francis hospitals, with the four day program ending with a pinning ceremony.

“With the demand for nurses on the rise, Thomas Health Hospital’s Junior Nurse Academy is a great way to attract bright young students to the profession,” BridgeValley Nursing Program Director B. Kent Wilson said in a news release. “These types of partnerships and events are vital to demonstrating to students all of the education options and career pathways the healthcare industry provides in West Virginia.”
