Professor of psychology at Glenville State College takes teaching to the seas

Posted: Updated:

When most people envision a college professor in action, the traditional image of people convened in a room in ideally rapt attention more often than not comes to mind.

For six weeks of his summer, Glenville State College professor of psychology Fred Walborn's traditional classroom became U.S. naval ship USS Bataan, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship.

Aboard the ship, Walborn taught two introductory psychology classes to enlisted Navy and Marine Corps personnel. This isn't his first trip onboard. The summer of 2014 marked his fourth spent teaching onboard U.S. Navy boats, having been on the USS Eisenhower aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf and the USS Barry destroyer in the Mediterranean Sea in prior years.

In addition to teaching, Walborn also spent time with the marines and sailors, playing chess, exercising and working on a novel.

Unlike regular classroom teaching, Walborn travels to different parts of the world every time he steps onboard another ship.
