A shortage of bus drivers may cause students and families to wait at the bus stop a little longer.
In Kanawha County, there are seven bus driver positions that are not filled.
Even though there is a stack of applications, training supervisor Jimmy Lacy says many people don’t follow through.
Lacy said that the position is “a lot of responsibility, so they think that is more responsibility than I want if I can do a class and get 50 percent I am happy.”
There are substitute drivers to cover the unfilled routes, but that causes problems if anyone calls in sick or takes a vacation.
When that happens, everyone from mechanics to supervisors have to hop on the bus and drive, putting their daily duties on hold.
