Friends, family members and several area residents came together Wednesday to say goodbye to a well-known individual who served his community in many ways.

A large procession of firefighters, police cars and EMT’s gathered on Route 40 in the Triadelphia area to pay tribute to John Philip Harto of Valley Grove who died on Sunday.

Harto served as the Valley Grove Volunteer Fire Department Chief for several years. He also was employed as a school bus driver for Ohio County Schools and worked part-time for the Valley Grove Water Department.

A burial mass was held early Wednesday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. After the mass a large procession involving several area fire and police departments rode through the Valley Grove area.

A number of Ohio County school buses were positioned along the route to pay tribute.

Harto is survived by his wife of 34 years. He also leaves behind one daughter and granddaughter as well as two brothers.

Harto was 57-years-old.
