Band of the Week: Brooke High School

This week’s WTRF C.A. House “Band of the Week “comes to us from the Northern Panhandle, known as the “pride of Brooke County.”

The news spread like wild fire when Brooke High School students found out that they were chosen as Band of the Week. “It’s nice knowing all of our hard work has paid off,” said Ashley VanCamp, Color Guard Captain.

Members of the Brooke High School Marching Band pride themselves on their cohesiveness and their great ability to work together as what makes them successful. “I think what makes our band special is that everyone is individual everyone is themselves. our individuality works together and makes us a unique band,” said Lindsay Six, Drum Major.

81 members make up the marching band this year, led by first-year band director John Leonard.

Leonard, who once played trumpet here in the marching band, says at first he was worried about how the kids would transition with a new band director, but the kids’ personalities and work ethic made it easy for him. He said, “These kids have got it and it makes my job a treat to come back to everyday.”

Brooke High School has had a marching band for over 50 years and have accumulated dozens and dozens of awards and trophies. They hope to take home another trophy at their next competition in Charleston at the West Virginia state invitational marching band competition.
