Bad news for the Buckeye State when it comes to bed bugs.
Cleveland, Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo all rank within the top fifteen most infested cities in the U.S. according to pest control service Terminix.
Infestations have been on the rise since the 1990s.
Health officials say that once an infestation does occur it will most likely take a professional exterminator to get rid of the bugs. However, they say there are some thing you can do take care of the problem in it’s early stages.
“There are some real simple things that home owners can do. Vacuuming. I know it’s simple. It doesn’t sound like it but it does work. Vacuuming around the beds, the couches, where you have sleeping and where you have a problem. Steam heating. If you have a steamer it does help. The biggest thing we recommend is washing with hot water and drying with hot heat,” said Howard Gamble of the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department.
Health officials also say that while bed bugs do bite and can be a nuisance, they do not carry any known type of disease.
