The ongoing drug problem in the Ohio Valley is the reason Belmont County jail is running out of room.
Officials said the jail expanded seven years ago, but they are in need of jail space right now.
Sheriff Dave Lucas and Belmont County Commissioners plan to visit other counties to gather some ideas on how to handle the increase.
“Down the road, we should be looking at a misdemeanor facility to take the burden off the main jail to a misdemeanor facility or expand the jail again,” said Lucas. “This is what we are looking into because we see the problem.”
Lucas also said because of changes in state laws, more drug offenders are now being sent to the county jails rather than to state facilities.
