Lady Gaga is helping to bring attention to sexual assaults on college campuses with her new video “Til It Happens to You.”
The video depicts several scenarios where young adults get sexually assaulted and one Ohio Valley college is stepping up to make sure this doesn’t happen to their students.
One-in-five women will be sexually assaulted during their four years of college.
Many people don’t want to think about it, but Bethany College is approaching that statistic proactively, before freshmen students even step foot on campus with their online bystander training program.
It encourages students to intervene on behalf of one another if they see something potentially violent going on, and gives them the resources of who to contact if it does happen before intervention.
Bethany College‘s Director of Student Engagement and Responsibility, Amber Resetar, is making sure their students understand.
“I’ve touched every member of the freshmen class and talked to them about this. If you look at the statistics, and they’re just slowly coming out now, because these bystander intervention programs are fairly new, but campuses that have successful bystander intervention programs see about a 50-percent reduction rate in violence,” said Resetar.
Resetar also believes this new video can help others who aren’t exposed to these types of programs understand the seriousness of sexual violence.
“It’s putting it on a really national platform, so people really think about the fact that it’s still an ongoing issue and people hope that in 2015 that it’s going by the wayside, but truthfully it;s not. Our statistics are pretty significant nationwide for the issue. It really gave it a voice from someone that is attuned to this generation,” said Resetar.
School across the country are holding programs like at Bethany College.
