Bike engines roared Saturday in Wheeling

Engines roared in the Wheeling Hospital parking lot Saturday for the 6th annual Elm Grove Eagle Riders Poker Run.

Dozens of bikers are participating in the poker run throughout the Ohio Valley, and all the money raised will benefit the Wheeling Hospital Pediatric Diabetes Fund.

Dr. Amy Jean of Wheeling Hospital said the idea came directly from the bike group. She said the hospital plans to use the money to benefit their patients in a special way.

“Every summer there is a diabetes camp this is in southern West Virginia, and a lot of kids can’t afford the tuition or they can’t afford transportation, so I’ve used the money to pay for their tuition to camp as well as getting them down there. So, I’d say that is one major use. There’s other families that have periods of lapses in their insurance, and if they need coverage for their insulin, or testing supplies, or syringes, then we use it just to purchase supplies for them,” said Dr. Amy Jean, Pediatric Endocrinologist from Wheeling Hospital.

After leaving the hospital, the Eagles riders headed to Captain’s Quarters in New Martinsville, Riverside in Powhatan Point and the Moundsville Eagles. The group is hoping to raise at least $10,000. The Eagles participate in several other fund raisers throughout the year as well.
