Bus drivers from across the region will display their skills during a regional Ohio School Bus Driver Safety ROAD-E-O next month.
The Indian Creek Local School District has been selected to host this year’s event. More than 50 drivers are expected to take part in a series of events to test their knowledge and maneuverability on the large vehicles.
Brenda Staffilino, director of transportation for the school district and assistant coordinator, said the activity occurs over a period of eight hours and incorporates written tests, bus inspection and an obstacle course. This is the first time that Indian Creek will hold the contest.
“It’s a competition that’s held annually and our staff participates,” she said. “Now that I have new drivers, I decided the minimal training they have as a bus driver was not enough for what they do.”
Eleven drivers from the district will take part and Staffilino said she has made the event mandatory for those with less than five years on the job.
This year’s event will take place at 8:30 a.m. on April 18 in the parking lot of Indian Creek Middle School.
