Bridgeport, Martins Ferry Police Save Life of Man They Attempted to Arrest

A Belmont County man who was wanted on several warrants was determined not to be taken into custody by police, and his desire to remain a free man almost got him killed after a plunge into the Ohio River.

In the end, the officers he was trying so hard to avoid ended up saving his life.

Shaheim Price, 20, of Bellaire, was reportedly walking along the railroad tracks on State Route 7 on Sunday when a local police chief saw him and realized there were two warrants out for him. Soon, Bridgeport and Martins Ferry Police were on the scene near the Bridgeport Bridge, but Price had ducked out of sight.

Police said Price was in the river thrashing around, but it suddenly became apparent that his problems with warrants were not as serious as his problems with swimming.

Belmont County residents are applauding the two Martins Ferry officers for saving Price’s life. Police took him to East Ohio Regional Hospital, then to the Belmont County Jail. The warrants he was trying to avoid turned out to be failure to appear and a probation violation.
