This week’s WTRF-C.A. House Band of the Week is the Bellaire Big Reds. While they are a young group with only 46 members, including the 11-member Red Line Dance Team, first-year band director Holly McCormack said they are a hard-working bunch.
The entertaining halftime show features a variety of rock music. Seventh grade student Tanner Schmidli is part of the impressive drum line. The band also features a talented group of trumpet and saxophone players.
The Red Line Dance Team is under the direction of Marian Stolz, and the group has enjoyed a great deal of success over the years, including winning a number of competitions. The routine includes a mix of dancing and acrobatics. Dance team member Lauren Hagiloizou said the best part is getting to spend time with ten close friends.
While they have a lot of fun, members say it’s not all light-hearted. They said it takes a lot of hard work, teamwork, practice and people who are willing to cooperate and take the time.
They all agree that playing in front of a large crowd is a special feeling. “It was nerve wracking at first but you get used to it. Fells good when you walk off everybody is cheering for you,” said Michael Mounsey, a senior band member. Fellow senior Greg Mehlman said being a part of the band is always a good time, and a good learning experience.
You can see the band on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Field in Bellaire when the Big Reds take on Union Local.
