Community invited to celebrate Wheeling Jesuit Volleyball National Championship

Wheeling Jesuit has planned a week full of exciting events for both the campus and community to celebrate the Cardinals first-ever national championship.

Celebrations will kick off Sunday Jan. 17 when students, alumni, staff, and the community are all invited to a bonfire from 6-7:30 p.m. outside the McDonough Center. Some snacks, music, and special activities will be provided for all who attend.

Tuesday, there will be a “Meet the Team” at The Ratt, located in Swint Hall from 9-11 p.m. A limited number of commemorative t-shirts and volleyballs will be given out.

Ye Olde Alpha in Wheeling will host the team for a special dinner on Wednesday night.

Thursday evening, the team will present the university with the National Championship trophy during a special ceremony between the men’s and women’s basketball games against West Liberty University. U.S. Rep. David McKinley (R-WV), President, Rev. James Fleming, and other officials will be there for the ceremony.

The week will wrap up at WesBanco Arena when the Wheeling Nailers will honor the team during their games against the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday Jan. 22. The game starts at 7:35 p.m. and the women will be recognized during one of the game intermissions.

Wheeling Jesuit athletic director Kevin Forde said, “What a great way to start the spring semester for all our students on campus. Winning the national championship goes beyond the walls of the athletic department, and we hope everyone can come out and enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity.”
