Congressman David McKinley is spear heading a campaign with eight local colleges and universities from both sides of the river to help bring research grants to the Ohio Valley.
Their hope is to combine the resources of the institutions and apply for a federal grant.
So far, they have narrowed down their research topic to the broad subject of opioid drug abuse.
They hope the research will help keep local high schoolers in the area and help the local economy.
“Our kids can’t find jobs here. We know it works in other areas. Why aren’t we doing it here in our valley? We see the effect what’s happening in WVU. We’re seeing what’s happened around Pittsburgh with Carnegie Mellon University and Pitt collaborating on efforts up there. Pittsburgh‘s reinvented itself. Why can’t this happen in our valley,” said McKinley.
The group’s next meeting will be held at Wheeling Jesuit in the near future.
