His country music career has spread across more than five decades and now the Wheeling Cat is preparing for one last go-around which starts at Waterfront Wednesday.
Slim Lehart has meant so much to the Ohio Valley music scene over the years.
Not only does he have a star here outside the Capitol Theatre but Wheeling Mayor Andy McKenzie also declare Wednesday June 10th, Slim Lehart Day across the Friendly City.
The Wheeling Cat has strummed his reliable guitar all across the nation and even overseas to England but one night in Nashville with biggest name in country music is a memory that sticks out in Slim’s career.
“Midnight in Nashville, Tennessee on Broadway signing some autographs with Johnny Cash, It can’t get any better than this,” said Slim. “And then Johnny passed and I thought well people would pull out that autograph and say ‘Hey, I got Johnny Cash’s autograph but I wonder who this Slim Lehart guy is?’
Johnny had actually just gotten out of the hospital when he played with Slim in Nashville so the promoters we’re sure how long Johnny would last so he technically opened up for Slim that night. Since Johnny was just released from the hospital he even had to borrow Slim’s guitar for the show.
Slim will be playing that same guitar this week with the Wheeling Feeling for Waterfront Wednesday. Show starts Wednesday at 7 PM at Heritage Port.
