One couple is looking to beat all odds in order to live a long, healthy life with their 4-year-old daughter.
Shari Martin was diagnosed with breast cancer, but things got worse when she received the frightening news that her husband, Shad, was also diagnosed with cancer after being in remission following an aggressive treatment for colorectal cancer from 2014.
According to ABC News, it was during Shari’s first chemotherapy treatment when Shad told her that his cancer has come back and re-grouped in his liver.
Shari and Shad have matching ‘his and her’ chemo towers and a private room at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center as they fight through chemotherapy together.“It’s a really surreal experience when you look across the room, your husband has a chemo IV in, and you have a chemo IV in, and you’re young,” Shari told ABC News. “It’s very surreal but for me, it fortifies my relationship with him. To see him taking it in stride, makes me realize, ‘OK, I’ve got to take this in stride too.”
Shari and Shad are working to get healthy for their 4-year-old daughter Alana. They are trying to explain to her in the best way possible what is going on with her parents, especially since Shari recently shaved her head.
“We read her a book that no parent ever wants to read to their child,” Shari told ABC News. “It talks about the mommy losing her hair and now our daughter, at 4, has the words to talk about what’s happening. I shaved my head because I didn’t feel like dealing with it falling out anymore. She [Alana] puts headbands on me, tied a little ribbon around my head, and she said ‘You look so pretty.'”
Martin said she and Shad plan on taking a tropical family vacation to celebrate completing chemotherapy, which is expected to end for the pair by 2016.
