Tuesday a federal judge approved a near $15 billion settlement in the U.S. involving Volkswagen Group’s diesel car emissions recall.
The settlement comes about a year after the car manufacturer admitted to rigging 11 million vehicles worldwide with software designed to evade emissions standards.
Consumers affected by the issues were given two options:1. Keep your car, get the problem fixed and Volkswagen will send them a check as well or 2. The customer can have the manufacturer buy their car and they’d receive a new one in return.
For avid Volkswagen owner Jessica Barclay the decision was easy, “The option for fixing the car still included a generous check. For me to take the fixed car and a big check and keep my 2013, the numbers were very close,” Barclay told 7News on Wednesday. “The opportunity to trade in, buyback, my older car to get into a 2017 instead of a 2013 seemed like a no brainer to me.”
If you think you may be affected by the settlement go to the Volkswagen settlement website, then follow the instructions online to see if you qualify.
