The West Virginia Division of Highways have announced they have closed the Aetnaville Bridge to all traffic due to a preliminary report of its declining condition.
The 125-year-old bridge will close to all traffic, including pedestrian and bicycle, effective 7:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 20.
The bridge, built in 1891, connects Wheeling Island to South Zane Highway just off of Ohio Route 7. It was closed to vehicular traffic in 1988, but residents have used it as a walking bridge since its closure.
Officials with the WVDOH say they have no plans on making repairs to the structure.
