The Wheeling Nailers arrived back in Wheeling Wednesday morning following an incredible and historic win in South Carolina. The guys seemed a little tired, until they saw all of their fans waiting at WesBanco Arena.
During game seven of the ECHL Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, the Wheeling Nailers scored with just 10 seconds left in the game to pull off the historic win. No other team in the ECHL has ever won both games six and seven while on the road, during playoffs.
“We’re not done yet, we’re hoping to go down to Allen and come home again with another celebration for sure,” said Wheeling Nailers left wing.
Coming home, dozens of fans packed the parking lot in Nailer Nation as the team rolled back into town with a police escort and the fans went nuts, “When they were winning last night I just in shock, over the fact that they were winning and the fact that we’re going to go to the finals now,” said Nailers fan, John Hill.
The Nailers had fans of all ages to welcome them back home. 7News spoke with maybe their youngest fans who were waiting to greet the ECHL Eastern Conference Champions. Blake Higgins, 3, and his sister Karlee, 6.
“The Nailers are awesome,” said Blake. Karlee agreed that she loves going to the Nailer’s games.
Wheeling city officials say the win for the Nailers is also win for the city and the Ohio Valley at large.
“The Nailers contribute to the quality of life to this community and not only that, they’re an excellent team and they provide national exposure to the city of Wheeling. So now people in the Dallas, Texas area are going to be in the know about Wheeling, West Virginia,” said Wheeling City Manager, Robert Herron.
The Wheeling Nailers now moving onto the Kelly Cup Finals this weekend in Texas.
