Do you ever feel if you could get a second chance at a fresh start, you would take it — no questions asked? That’s what the Urban Mission in Steubenville, OH is doing with Fresh Start Mondays.
“What we realized is that we’ve all been given a fresh start in life and it’s something that really takes place at the Urban Mission each and everyday,” said Reverend Ashley Steele.
Each week, the Urban Mission will be sharing how one person was able to give their life a fresh start either through religion or with the help of the Urban Mission, like Jeanne DiGiulio, who came to Steubenville from Kansas, pregnant and without a place to stay.
“I had no money, I had nothing. I was pregnant with my daughter, one of my friends took me in and gave me a place to live,” DiGiulio said. “They told me about how they give out food and help with the baby stuff if they can.”
After DiGiulio was given that fresh start, she is now giving back to others looking for a fresh start as well by volunteering in the kitchen and wherever they need her.
The Urban Mission will be offering skills to help with daily life as well as counseling if someone is in need of a listening ear.
“A lot of people don’t have the chance to get counseling and a lot of the agencies around here are really booked up,” said counseling intern Megan Jarvis. “We offer something that’s free and you can just come in and sit down and talk.”
Steele says their door is always open if anyone is in need of shelter, food, or someone to talk to and they will do whatever they can to help provide guidance or the opportunity needed to have that fresh start.
