Experts Predict Better Success With This Years’ Flu Shot

Nearly 57,000 people die of either the flu or Pneumonia each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

We are on the cusp of fall and winter seasons. The leaves are changing, the weather is getting colder, and that also means it’s time to get your flu shot.

Pharmacist Jason Backel from Custer Pharmacy in Cadiz says it’s the perfect time to get the shot and it is for the good of everyone.

“The elderly have a weaker immune system, so if you’re elderly, you’re going to be coming into contact with younger people. We want the younger people vaccinated as well, so it protects everybody,” said Backel.

Backel says he hopes last year’s vaccine’s low protection rate will not steer people away from getting a flu shot this year, because improvements have been made.

“The flu was pretty bad last year. The vaccine was pretty much a failure. It didn’t cover the strains like they wanted it to. It was only about a 20% match. This year, they’re predicting a better match. So it’s going to be a better vaccine,” said Backel.
