Fatality Reported at West Virginia Coal Mine

First responders in Taylor County, West Virginia were dispatched to the Leer Mine in Grafton Monday morning due to a fatality.

The call came in around 4:15 a.m., according to the Harrison-Taylor 911 Center.

The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training confirmed that a miner did die while working on his shift. Leslie Smithson, with the office, says there will be investigators on site Monday trying to determine if the death is attributed to mining activity or if the man suffered from a medical condition.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration will also investigate.
