One local high school celebrated their homecoming this weekend by welcoming a very special guest.
Phyllis Niekro was crowned homecoming queen at Bridgeport High School back in 1954. Sixty years later, she returned to her alma mater to take part in this year’s festivities.
Niekro is the sister of hall of fame pitcher Phil Niekro. Phil returned to his home town Friday night to drive his sister’s car in the homecoming parade. That came as a big surprise to Phyllis, who had no idea her famous brother was in town.
“I thought he was busy doing one of his hall of fame things but he came in today I think,” Phyllis said.
She also said she “screamed and yelled” when she saw her brother.
Phil explained that she had no idea that he was coming and he flew up Friday afternoon.
Phyllis was accompanied by her husband who was her homecoming date back in 1954.
