Fort Henry Bridge Reopens After Accident

Traffic on the Fort Henry Bridge eastbound screeched to a halt and then became gridlock starting at 1:15 Monday afternoon.

Drivers were backed up into Belmont County on I-70, while Ohio County deputies and Wheeling Police attended to an accident on the span.

The Fort Henry Bridge eastbound, toward Wheeling, was turned into a solid parking lot.

What drivers couldn’t see was a pickup truck up ahead that had rolled over and was blocking both lanes

Wheeling Police received help from the Sheriff’s Department and two tow-trucks and they got it cleared away within a half an hour.

“We did find a Ford Ranger Pickup truck that had been flipped over on its side blocking both lanes of traffic that had been struck by another vehicle. The pickup was eastbound on I-70 passing the Island entrance ramp when an Acura coming up the ramp, the driver failed to yield the right-of-way, striking the pickup which then in turn made that driver lose control, eventually flipping over, blocking both lanes of traffic,” said Wheeling Police Deputy Chief Martin Kimball.

Deputy Chief Kimball says neither driver was injured and they both declined treatment. Both vehicles had to be towed.

Police say the Acura driver may be cited for failure to yield.
