A 72-year-old Hancock County man found guilty of helping his son rape a 9-year-old boy learned his fate before Judge Jason Cuomo Tuesday morning.
Karl Halstead was sentenced to 75 to 300 years in jail for his role in the rape of the minor.
During the late December trial, it was revealed that Halstead and his son lured three boys into their home with pop sickles, two of whom escaped, but Halstead held down the one 9-year-old while his son raped and sodomized him.
Judge Cuomo had Halstead move closer to share some harsh words.
“What you did to this little boy, your son to this little boy was unspeakable. This boy and his family will never be the same again. You have destroyed this boy’s innocence. You have destroyed his childhood, and most likely any chance he will ever have to be normal again,” said Judge Cuomo. “I consider what you and your son did to this little boy on the same level as murder and if I was authorized by the state legislature to impose the death penalty, you’d have it today. As sure as I’m sitting here, you would be on death row today.”
Before sentencing Halstead, Judge Cuomo commented on how religious Karl and his son say they are.
“If it is forgiveness you are seeking, you’re looking in the wrong place, because you are going to have to get it from God, you will not get it from me.”
