Ohioans needing heating assistance because of disconnection or threatened disconnection of their utility service can get help through various programs.

Officials with the Ohio Development Services Agency say the Winter Crisis Program provides assistance to eligible households that are threatened with disconnection, have been disconnected or have less than a 10-day supply of bulk fuel. Eligible households’ gross income must be at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio says its Winter Reconnect Order allows residential customers to have their service restored or maintained by paying the amount due or $175, whichever is less. Customers’ whose service has already been disconnected must pay the $175 and possibly a reconnection fee.

Other state and federal programs also provide assistance.
