One California husband’s list of all the reasons why he loves his wife who is battling depression and anxiety is sparking a discussion about mental health awareness and the stigma that follows.
The list included things like: “Small animals make her cry,” “She has experienced severe tragedy yet is the most optimistic person about humanity I know” and “Without realizing it, she makes me want to do more for her than I have ever wanted to do for anyone.”
Molly Murphy had posted the list her husband, Tim, wrote on Imgur. The list currently has nearly 1 million views.
“I’m not saying mental illness is cured by nice words on a mirror,” Murphy wrote in her post. “In fact, it takes professional care, love, empathy, sometimes even medication just to cope. Many people struggle with mental illness […] instead of showing them hate or anger when they act out, show them kindness. […] Everyone needs a little help sometimes.”
This wasn’t a random event, though.
Murphy told ABC News that she and Tim were newlyweds in San Francisco, but Tim’s job had sent him to Los Angeles, meaning they had been spending the last few months apart.
On weekends, Tim would buy Molly tickets to see him because she “wasn’t doing very well.”
On one particularly bad day, Murphy decided to get on a plane to Los Angeles a few days earlier than Tim had expected.
When looked at the mirror next to their bed, she found the note that Tim had left her.
“I was overcome,” she said. “We had been going through so many trials […] just for him to find the time and love to write all those kind and loving words for me. […] It was perfection.'”
Her husband said he had planned to fill the list even more, but it was cut short due to his wife’s early arrival.
Murphy said she hopes her post will help to spread awareness of the stigma surrounding mental health.
