Neighborhoods will be filled with kids over the next few night, going door to door asking for candy. But police say parents need to be careful, and avoid the doors of registered sex offenders.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department will have deputies manning the streets throughout the county. There are 103 registered sex offenders living in the county, and Sheriff Fred Abdalla said the best way to keep children safe is to stay by their side as they go door to door.
“Especially today, with all the nut cases we have around the country, you never know, they could snatch a kid up, pull them into the house. Never go Halloweening by yourself, absolutely, positively don’t do that,” the Sheriff said.
Parents may also want to use their computer to map out a safe route. There may be sex offenders closer than you think. An online database to find where sex offenders live can be found on MegansLaw.com. All you have to do is type in your zip code in the search bar, and it will give you a list of every registered sex offender who shares that zip code.
