The Wheeling Jesuit men’s soccer team pulled off a huge upset Wednesday night at Bishop Schmitt Field , knocking off the No.1 team in the country the University of Charleston, 2-0.
The Cardinals are the first team to defeat the Golden Eagles in a regular season match in 26 matches. WJU handed UC its first MEC loss since Oct. 26, 2013 and it is the first opponent to shut out UC since Oct. 16, 2013.
The Cardinals got a first half goal from Aitor de Heredia to give Jesuit a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half Vincent Faraji added a goal to give the Cards a 2-0 lead.
Wheeling Jesuit goalie Mathew McCormick stopped 10 UC shots on goal in a perfect night in net.
“We executed the perfect game plan!,” exclaimed a victorious WJU head coach James Regan. “We sat back, absorbed their pressure and hit them on the counter attack. I am proud of the team effort tonight! Everyone came up big!”
WJU (5-3-1/3-2 Mountain East Conference) stays at home where it will entertain Urbana University on Saturday,in a 3:30 p.m. match.
