Kidnapped Girl Reunited with Birth Family After 17 Years

One young 17-year-old girl in South Africa has been reunited with her family after she was kidnapped as a baby, according to CBS News.

CBS News reported Morne and Celeste Nurse only knew their baby for three days before she was stolen from her hospital cot. The Nurses had three more children, but never forgot about the little girl they named Zephany. The Nurses were given hope when their daughter Cassidy came home from school one day and told her parents about a girl at school that looked like her. Photographs taken by Cassidy immediately connected with Celeste.

“That’s when we saw the photo of her and I burst out,” Celeste told CBS News. “I got this feeling inside, I just grabbed my heart and said this is my daughter. This is my daughter!”

The police got involved and began with DNA tests. After six weeks, Celeste found out Cassidy’s classmate was her kidnapped daughter.

“I burst out into tears when I saw her,” Celeste told CBS News. “I couldn’t stop crying. I couldn’t stop crying. I said,’finally I found you, for 17 years I have been looking for you. I found you finally, you’re mine again.'”

The woman who stole Zephany will appear in court Friday as she faces kidnapping charges. Zephany, who grew up under a different name, has been taken to a safe place by social welfare officials until her future living arrangements are decided.
