Lady Hilltoppers No. 18 in USA Today Coaches’ Poll

The West Liberty University women’s basketball team will tip off the 2014-15 season as the No. 18-ranked team in the nation.

That news hit the hilltop Tuesday night when the USA Today released its annual NCAA Division II Preseason Women’s Basketball Top 25.
Coach Lynn Ullom’s Hilltoppers were the highest-ranked team from the MEC, slotting in at No. 18 with 213 points in the nationwide balloting. Defending MEC champion Glenville State was right behind West Liberty at No. 19 with 211 points while Charleston was among the teams also receiving votes with 8 points.
The Black and Gold had been ranked No. 1 with 8 of the 12 first-place votes in the MEC’s Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which was released at Monday afternoon’s annual MEC Media Day event in Bridgeport, W.Va. Charleston was picked to finish second in the MEC with Glenville State tabbed for third.
West Liberty returns all five starters from last year’s MEC runner-up squad, which posted WLU’s eighth 20-win season in the past nine years and earned an NCAA Division II Tournament bid. The Hilltoppers will also be helped by the return of All-America guard Hillary Southworth, who redshirted last year due to injury after finishing second in the nation in scoring during the 2012-13 season.
This is West Liberty’s first appearance in the USA Today Top 25 since midway through the 2010-11 season but it’s the second national Top 25 ranking of the current preseason. The Hilltoppers were No. 9 in the Division II Women’s Bulletin national rankings released late last month.
West Texas A&M, last year’s national runner-up, is No. 1 in the USA Today poll with 8 first-place votes and 704 points. Cal Poly-Pomona was second with 10 first-place votes and 644 points with Drury, Mo.; Nova Southeastern, Fla. and defending national champion Bentley, Mass. rounding out the top five.
The West Liberty open on the road Nov. 14 with a 5 p.m. game against Mercyhurst (Pa.) in the PSAC/MEC Challenge at California (Pa.).
