Murray Energy has laid off more than 2,000 workers in just under a month. Friday coal miners from across the Ohio Valley that have either been idled or laid-off came by the droves to Benwood to attend an informational meeting about what options are available for them and their families.

One idled worker from Ohio County Mining in Benwood, said it’s been rough on him and he has a large family to provide for, “I have a family of 9 and it’s tough, so I don’t know what I’m going to do now. Hopefully this is just a short-term thing,” said David Orr.

The meeting was held at the American Legion Post 46, and provided the laid-off workers with information about a number of resources available, including West Virginia’s national emergency grant for dislocated miners, unemployment insurance, job search assistance, and more.
