Students at a local elementary school are learning how to stay safe with the help of a little bit of magic and a puppet called Turbo the Turtle.

Mike Eakins with the Officer Phil program taught the third and fourth grade students at Jefferson Elementary School in Follansbee the various ways to stay safe, whether it be at school, on the bus, in the car, riding their bike or talking with strangers.

The program made learning about the mundane topics fun and entertaining.

“We do have a good time and we have a lot of laughs, but they do learn when they leave, they have learned things about what to do and how to stay safe,” Eakins said.

The kids also learned about respect, in addition to the lessons on safety. Eakins taught them how important it is to respect themselves, everyone around them, service personnel and teachers.

First and second graders learned about fire safety and how to stop, drop and roll.
