A Poca County man was arrested June 14 after attempting to light his wife on fire and burn her alive.

Shawn and Kimberly Love had been living in a tent in a friend’s yard when Shawn tried to have sex with Kimberly.

She turned him down, angering Love, who then took some medicine to sleep.

When he woke up, he tried again to have sex with his wife, angered further by the lack of cigarettes, which is when he started trying to light a fire in the tent.

Love then poured gasoline on the tent, telling her “this time they were all going to die,” according to the criminal complaint.

Kimberly later told officers she heard the flick of the lighter, and had to get out of the rear of the tent with her three puppies because he was blocking the front exit.

Neighbors told officers that Shawn Love entered their trailer with burns on his lower legs, which is consistent with the story told by Kimberly and evidence found at the scene, according to WV State Fire Marshal Shawn Alderman.

According to Love, this is not the first time she almost died in a fire with her puppies.

About one year ago, the two were living in a trailer when it caught fire, killing her nine puppies.

Shawn Love is being charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree and is being held on a $500,000 bond.
