What’s college basketball without a little risk? U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D- W.Va.) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made a friendly wager on Thursday night’s NCAA Basketball Sweet 16 matchup between the West Virginia Mountaineers and the University of Kentucky Wildcats.

The stakes: a Derby-Pie® exclusively baked by Kern’s Kitchen in Louisville, Kentucky against Chico’s Bakers pepperoni rolls, the official pepperoni rolls sold at Mountaineer Field for WVU games.

As proud West Virginia University alumni and loyal Mountaineer fans, Sen. Manchin stated in a press release he and his wife are looking forward to cheering on the Mountaineers.

“I was there five years ago when we upset Number 1 ranked Kentucky team, and I have the utmost confidence that our tough WVU team can do it again. Hail West Virginia!,” he said.

If the Mountaineers upset the Wildcats, Senator McConnell will send Senator Manchin Kentucky‘s famous Derby-Pie®, which is exclusively baked by Kern’s Kitchen in Louisville. Following a Kentucky win, Senator Manchin will send to Senator McConnell a basket of Chico‘s Bakery pepperoni rolls, which has been a staple snack across Appalachia since its origin in the coal mines during the first half of the 20th Century.

“Big Blue Nation has a lot to be excited about as it pursues its ninth men’s basketball National Championship and undefeated record,” Sen. McConnell said in a press release. “I look forward to enjoying Chico‘s Bakery pepperoni rolls as I watch UK play in the Elite Eight game.”

The senators aren’t the only ones raising the stakes. On Tuesday, West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (D) challenged Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear (D) to a similar wager.
