Marshall County Woman’s Home Burns While Children Are At School

Bonnie Culp of 367 Virginia Park Road in the Mt. Olivet area of Marshall County says she has lost her home and all her possessions.

But she is grateful the children are safe.

The home she rented for 12 years is destroyed.

Culp, a widow, lived there with her 11-year-old son and 17-year-old granddaughter.

The children were both at school and Culp was at home when the fire began.

“I was cleaning and I just heard something like a big pop,” said Culp. “And then I started smelling smoke really bad. and I ran out of the house. And when I did, my whole house was engulfed in flames. And I screamed for someone to help me to call the fire department.”

“This was an attic fire,” said Mt. Olivet Fire Chief Rob Nolte. “The cause is unknown. At this time, it looks like it may be electrical. It just got out of hand quick. The house is a total loss.”

Connie Culp was able to get three dogs and one pet bird safely out of the house.

A pet snake belonging to her son in Texas died in the fire.

She says she had no insurance and has lost everything.

She said a neighbor called the fire department.

She said her family smelled smoke last night, but they checked all over the house and saw nothing,. so they assumed it must have come from a nearby campfire.
