Martins Ferry murder expected to be officially ruled homicide in coming weeks

Brand new information has been released on a murder that occurred in Martins Ferry, 22 days ago. Now it’s officially about to become a homicide case.

Gregg Thompson was shot and killed in an apartment at Jaycee Manor in Martins Ferry.

The prosecutor says six young men were angry about something posted on social media.

They were together at the Wheeling Skate Park, about four hours before the shooting.

They apparently discussed the problem, got into two cars, headed first to Wheeling Island to get a gun and to Martins Ferry to do something about it.

“The issue that caused the confrontation was over Facebook postings allegedly that Mr. Thompson had made that were either derogatory or threatening to one of the defendants’ kids. But by virtue of the fact that Mr. Thompson died after what started out as a fist fight, all of these defendants could be facing an aggravated murder charge,” Belmont County Prosecutor Dan Fry.

Dan Fry says the authorities know which one of the six suspects actually pulled the trigger. Five adults and one juvenile are now charged with aggravated burglary and obstructing official business.

But he says now they’ll make a final review and decide who was responsible for what.

He says murder charges will probably be filed by the end of December or just after the new year.
