Matthew Belardine Sentenced to Additional Jail; Probation Time

A man with ties to the Steubenville Rape Case found himself back behind bars after breaking his parole. Matthew Belardine learned his fate on Monday afternoon in Jefferson County Courtroom.

Last week, Belardine pleaded guilty to traveling to Arizona without permission from his probation officer, going to a bar, consuming alcohol and to a disorderly conduct charge. That incident happened on Thanksgiving weekend.

Because of the incident, Belardine will spend 60 days in jail, with credit for the 12 days he has already served.

The former volunteer assistant coach said he spent a lot of time thinking about his mistakes while he was in jail. Judge Patricia Cosgrove heard from Belardine’s father, and his attorney about how Matthew has changed since the April Grand Jury, but ultimately Cosgrove said Belardine didn’t understand.

“By no means do I take this lightly, I’m ashamed, I’m embarrassed, and I’m disappointed but one thing I’m not is a criminal,” Belardine said.

Cosgrove responded, “At one time you volunteered to be an assistant to the coach, you wanted to be a mentor, and you wanted to be an example to youth  and what have you done? I gave you a chance, I did order that you serve 10 days in jail but then you decide it’s ok for you, Mr. Belardine. I don’t know if its because you think you’re special?”

Cosgrove previously sentenced Belardine to ten days in jail and one year of probation in April 2014 after the Special Grand Jury indicted him. His probation was extended another six months at Monday’s sentencing. He will also undergo a drug and alcohol assessment by the Probation Department to determine if he needs counseling.

Belardine will also undergo frequent and random drug and alcohol testing. Judge Cosgrove said this is his last chance.
