Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Casino have made cuts to the 2015 racing schedule.
The Racetrack is cutting 50 days from its 2015 racing schedule to avoid lowering average daily purses. The racing year began March 1 and will now end on October 17 instead of in December.
Mountaineer General Manager Chris Kern said they want to maintain a certain quality of racing and the move will keep purses at the same level.
“If we reduce the purse funds anymore than where they are at, which has already been through a reduction once this year, we feel like it would impact the quality of racing, the number of horses in each race, which would obviously impact the betting on those races, which would be a bad situation that we don’t want to get in to,” Kern said.
The West Virginia Racing Commission last week approved the Resort’s request to reduce its racing schedule from 210 days to 160 days.
Assuming a similar situation happens again next year, with the reduction of purse funds or not enough purse funds available, Mountaineer may adjust the starting and end dates again.
Earlier this year, the commission approved Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races’ request to reduce its racing days from 220 to 187.
