The Wheeling Nailers have secured their spot in the ECHL Kelly Cup Finals.
What a playoff season it has been for the Wheeling Nailers, now they are headed to the finals for the first time since 1993. The Nailers are the first team in the ECHL history to win games 6 and 7 of a playoff series on the road.
The team will be traveling home Tuesday night and should be back in Wheeling some time around 9 a.m Wednesday.
The fans have been behind them the whole season, and Tuesday night was no different. Fans were decked out in their Nailers gear at TJ’s Sports Garden.
“They are just playing for the team, as a family, they’re playing for the city. And I fully believe that is what you really need to have a championship caliber team in any sport,” said Devin Clark, lifelong Nailers fan.
“Wheeling feeling, they bring it home first time they’re in the Kelly Cup, it would be a great thing for them. I think they’ll bring a lot of pride to the Wheeling area, the Ohio Valley, and a lot of people will be happy to see that happen,” said Brady McConnell, Nailers fan.
“Just a chance to play for that cup is going to be a great thing for this city,” said Clark.
The Kelly Cup Finals will start this Saturday in Allen, Texas.
Game two is Sunday in Allen, Texas.
They will play in Wheeling next Wednesday June 1, and then Friday and Saturday if necessary.
