The Wheeling Nailers rallied for a 3-2 victory in the shootout over the Elmira Jackals in front of nearly 4,000 fans on Education Day at WesBanco Arena.
Hundreds of area school kids were in the building and saw a couple early fights between Wheeling’s Max MacKay and Elmira’s Nick Tuzzolino and Wheeling Chaz Johnson and Todd Orlando, a former Nailer.
Elmira led 2-0 after two periods thanks to first-period goals from Taylor Stefishen (4) and a short-handed tally from Mike Seidel (2).
The Nailers came to life in the third period as Derek Army’s wrap around goal (2) cut the lead in half, and 1:41 later Clark Seymour’s blue line drive, his first goal of the season, tied the score at 2-2
After a scoreless overtime, Wheeling’s David Gilbert, the first shooter, put the puck behind Jackals goaltender Sam Marotta.
Nailers netminder Eric Hartzell, making his second start of the season, stopped all four Jackals shooters for the win. Zack Torquato ended the shootout as the fourth shooter with a goal.
The Nailers (6-5-0) are in Elmira this weekend for games on Saturday and Sunday.
