COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio’s governor and his Democratic challenger won’t face each other in debates ahead of Election Day.
The campaign of Republican Gov. John Kasich says he’s seeking other opportunities to discuss his plans for Ohio’s future.
Kasich spokeswoman Connie Wehrkamp says in a statement that moving on is the best thing for his campaign. She cited what she called the “implosion” of Democrat Ed FitzGerald’s campaign and Ohio Democrats’ move to shift resources away from the top of the ticket.
Wehrkamp’s comment came in response to a FitzGerald campaign statement, claiming that Kasich’s campaign refused to debate.
Jo Ann Davidson, Kasich’s point person on debate negotiations, says his campaign proposed two dates and locations in early discussions.
FitzGerald spokeswoman Lauren Hitt says nothing firm was offered in recent weeks.
