One annual event is making the holiday season easier for families.

If you’re looking for a good way to give back locally this holiday season, Sergeant Tom Howard say he sees no bigger smiles than when Ohio County kids get tot shop with a cop.

The annual event has been renewed for this year and now it’s being called “Kids and Cops.”

Dozens of officers take their own time to take students shopping at the Highlands Walmart for their Christmas gifts.

Last year the event raised more than $15,000 and gave over 125 children Christmas gifts.

It’s a favorite event for officers in Wheeling, Bethlehem, Valley Grove, West Liberty, Triadlephia and the Ohio County Sheriffs Office.

“Some of them would not have anything under their Christmas tree so we try to go out and we take as many as we can shopping, it’s a big thing to me and it kind of makes me feel like a big Santa Claus at Christmas time,” said Sgt. Howard.

Donations are being accepted right now you can donate cash or check and the money can only be donated by sending to PO Box 729 Wheeling, West Virginia  26003 or drop them off at Wheeling Police Headquarters.

Sgt. Howard says he does want people to be aware of any strange calls they’ve received about donations to make sure no is getting scammed.

If you receive a call asking to send money to a different location than police headquarters or that specific PO Box 729, Sgt. Howard says that is not for the event.
