Ohio County may tighten rules concerning smoking in public, if the Wheeling-Ohio County Board of Health acts later this month.
The new rules treat outside restaurant dining areas similar to the inside of the restaurant, banning smoking entirely, even though they are outside.
Other parts of the new rules affect the distance from doorways where employees can smoke on sidewalks.
Another aspect of the new rules would concerns e-cigarettes or “vaping.” Should the health board adopt the proposed regulation “vaping” would receive the same treatment as conventional cigarettes, cigars, or pipes.
The Board will take comments on the proposed rules until October 29th. Administrator Howard Gamble says the county Health Department has worked on tightening smoking regulations since 1996.
