The Ohio all-stars rode strong pitching and big hits to out gun the West Virginia stars 9-1 in the annual OVAC All-Star Softball Game played at Lisa’s Field at the I-470 Chambers Complex.
Led by Youngstown State recruit, Paige Geanangel of Indian Creek, and Robert Morris signee Katy Ellzy of Harrison Central, the pair combined for 15 strike outs and one walk in nine innings. Ellzy started in the circle and worked four innings with eight strikeouts, Geanangel went the final five with seven whiffs. West Virginia managed just five singles.
Buckeye’s Local’s Lauren Swiger and River’s Haylee Bower had three hits each, two singles and a triple, and Swiger knocked in two runs.
Madonna’s Chris Conti was named the OVAC Coach of the Year, and his freshman pitcher Katie Gasvoda was named OVAC Class A Player of the Year. Steubenville Central junior Alex McComb was named the Class 2A Player of the Year, and River’s Rosey Romick earned 3A Player of the Year honors. Ellzy won the 4A Player of the Year award for the third straight year, with Geanangel winning 5A Player of the Year for a second straight season.
