Ohio Valley Band Makes Waves With New Project

Since 2012, Hit Play has been taking the Wheeling music scene by storm.

In 2016, lead singer Ezra Hamilton says the band is ready to try something new – their own original music.

“I was probably 20-years-old when I first got to the Wheeling area, and original music was everywhere,” said Hamilton.

The six-member cover band gained big popularity with their smooth sound. Hamilton says he has always been thinking about writing his own songs, and the dream is now reality.

Hit Play is transitioning into the original band “Ezra John and the First Second.”

“We’re doing what we’re doing here in the Ohio Valley because I saw that it was needed,” said Hamilton.

Ezra John and the First Second released their first EP, which already has people listening in the Ohio Valley, they’ve sold 150 physical copies since April 1. The EP isn’t available digitally until June 1.

“I’ve traveled a lot, I’ve played all up and down the East Coast, New York to Atlanta, and Wheeling has always been a town that I find myself coming back to, because the community really gets behind things that are exciting,” said Hamilton.

Regardless of how far the band goes, Ezra says they are proud to perform, record, and build their band in Wheeling.

“It’s all about love. I can sit with my wife and kids and play my guitar and sing to them and have just as much fun as singing to a packed house at Generations on a Saturday night or singing to a packed house at Wheeling Brewing Company or any of the place that we perform,” said Hamilton.

You can also pick up a copy of the EP at CA House Music in St. Clairsville, Frederick’s Salon, and Nini’s Treasures at the Highlands.
