An Ohio Valley man was part of the U.S. Air Force C-130 military transport plane that crashed overnight in Afghanistan.
Ryan Hammond was a 2007 graduate of John Marshall High School.
“Ryan served our country well and represented the Ohio Valley heroically,” said long-time friend Scott Berry.
“I am heartbroken by this tragedy and offer my deepest sympathy and prayers to Ryan’s family and to all of the families of those killed. Their bravery and service to this nation will not be forgotten,” said U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito.
Hammond was part of the six-person crew along with five civilian passengers that died in the crash.
According to officials with the U.S. Air Force, the crash happened shortly after midnight Thursday at Jalalabad air field.
According to CBS News, the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the crash, but officials with the Pentagon say there is simply no evidence of that.
The plane crash is under investigation. Family members have set up a GoFundMe account.
