Ohio Valley Volunteers Spring Into Action for Annual Day of Caring

Hundreds of local business men and women came together for a Day of Caring on Wednesday.

It was the kick-off of the 2014-2015 campaign season for the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley, and things started with local employees and volunteers coming together to help companies and non-profit organizations across the Ohio Valley for their annual Day of Caring.

The day started at 8 a.m. as volunteers met at the WesBanco Arena’s Health Plan Pavilion, before heading out to perform some much needed community service tasks. The United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley Chair, Kirstie Barnett said volunteers do a wide range of tasks, “People will be painting, they will be sorting clothes, they may be cooking, they may be doing some repair jobs, so these are all activities that the agencies in the normal course of a day, would not be able to do without the help of these volunteers,” said Barnett.

The United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley’s mission is to advance the common good in the Upper Ohio Valley, but in order to do so, they need residents’ help. Barnett said they have set a minimum goal this year, because it’s a good benchmark, but they’d like to raise even more. “The goal for the 2014-2015 United Way Campaign is to raise $789,000 for the United Way,” Barnett said.

The experience is two-fold, because the volunteers were able to see first-hand how much need exists in our community and the community was able to thrive from the help the volunteers provide. Barnett said the volunteers help to do things the agencies can’t do regularly, “The volunteers are able to help the agencies do all of these projects that they can’t do on a daily basis,” said Barnett.
